A little prep and the right aftercare can make all the difference. We’ve gathered our best tips here to help your new lawn take root and thrive.
Before Your Sod Arrives
A strong lawn starts with a solid foundation. Here’s what to do before your sod hits the ground:
Clear the Area: Remove old grass, weeds, rocks, and debris.
Grade the Soil: Make sure the area is level with good drainage.
Loosen the Topsoil: Till 2–3 inches deep to promote root growth.
Add Topsoil or Lime (if needed): Adjust for soil quality and pH.
Rake Smooth: Create an even surface to lay sod on cleanly.
Installation
Laying Sod Like a Pro
Sod is a living product, so timing is everything. Once your pallets arrive, install them as soon as possible (preferably the same day).
Start Along a Straight Edge
Lay your first row flush to a sidewalk, driveway, or fence line.
Stagger Rows
Think brickwork-like offset seams to avoid erosion lines.
Avoid Gaps or Overlaps
Sod pieces should fit tightly together.
Use a Roller
Once laid, lightly roll your sod to press roots into the soil.
Aftercare
Keep It Watered, Keep It Thriving
Water is critical in the first few weeks. Here’s how to help your new sod establish healthy roots:
Water daily (or more often in extreme heat).
Cut back to every 2–3 days, depending on rainfall.
Water deeply once or twice per week to encourage strong roots.
Wait until your sod is well-rooted and dry to mow (usually around 2–3 weeks after installation).
